Fang Boran, Associate Professor at the Academy of Arts, Renmin University of China, began studying piano in childhood and started learning the clarinet in 1992 under the renowned clarinet educator Professor Jin Guangri. In 1994, he was admitted to the preparatory program of the Music Department at Minzu University of China, graduating in 2000 as the top student in his class. He then pursued further studies in Germany. In February 2001, he enrolled at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin, studying under the distinguished clarinetist and former Berlin Philharmonic principal Karl Leister, as well as the esteemed clarinet pedagogue Diethelm Kühn. From 2003, he performed as a guest and principal clarinetist with numerous orchestras, including the Berlin RIAS Youth Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Youth Orchestral Symphony, Berlin Youth Philharmonic, Munich Youth Philharmonic, German National Youth Symphony Orchestra in Berlin, Berlin “Konzerthaus” Symphony Orchestra, Macau Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic in Russia, Reinsberg Music Festival Orchestra in Germany, and the Asian Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2005, he performed as principal clarinetist and chamber musician at the prestigious Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival during its European tour.
In 2005, Fang Boran graduated with distinction from the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin, earning his master’s degree. That same year, he was admitted to the Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar, Germany, to pursue a soloist degree (equivalent to a doctorate) under the guidance of the renowned clarinetist Professor Martin Spangenberg. He graduated in 2009 with the highest distinction, “Bravo.” During his time in Germany, he was invited by numerous musicians to perform and record new music works on CD. In 2008, he collaborated with Rolf-Dieter Arens, president of the Weimar Academy of Music, to perform a solo recital at the Hundisburg Music Festival in Germany. He received multiple scholarships during his studies in Germany and has performed over a hundred concerts, including solo, chamber music, symphony, and opera performances. Since 2006, he served as a teaching assistant to Professor Martin Spangenberg. From 2008, he taught as a lecturer at the Joseph-Schmidt National Music School in Berlin. In 2008 and 2009, he broke new ground by joining the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra in Germany (as deputy principal clarinet) and the Rudolstadt Opera House, also known as the Thuringian Symphony Orchestra (as principal clarinet), becoming the first French-system clarinetist and the first Chinese clarinetist to join professional German orchestras.
In April 2009, his concert was broadcast live by German radio. Subsequently, he was invited by the National Centre for the Performing Arts in China to hold a lecture and concert in August 2009. The German Pasewalk newspaper praised his performance, describing it as “dreamlike and magically expressive,” with “unparalleled technique and tonal expression,” noting that “he makes everything possible with his clarinet!” In 2010, he returned to China and joined the faculty of the Academy of Arts at Renmin University of China. Since then, he has been invited to perform concerts and give masterclasses at various institutions across China. He is a signed artist with Buffet Crampon, the world’s largest instrument manufacturer, and the chief brand ambassador for AW, a renowned German reed and mouthpiece company, in China. He currently serves as Deputy Secretary-General of the Clarinet Society of the Chinese Musicians’ Association and Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the Chinese Section of the Asian Wind Music Association. Since 2012, he has served as a judge for major domestic and international competitions, acted as Artistic Director for the 2014 Beijing International Clarinet Festival, and was Vice Chairman of the jury for the 1st Asian International Wind Music Competition in 2016. His students have won numerous awards in competitions, and he has received multiple accolades for both performance and teaching.
