Manuel Carvalho

Manuel Augusto da Silva Carvalho was born in Ovar, Portugal, and began his musical studies at the age of 8 with his father, Fausto Carvalho. He refined his craft under the guidance of some of the world's finest clarinetists, including António Saiote, Alain Damiens, Carlos Alves, Guy Deplus, Gregory Smith, Henri Bok, Howard Klug, James Carrico, Kallio Miulberg, Luis Silva, Manuel Jerome, Michel Arrignon, Paul Meyer, Philippe Cuper, Rui Martins, Vladimir Stoyanov, and Walter Boeykens.

He pursued his education at the National Conservatory of Lisbon, the University of Music and Performing Arts, and the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from ESMAE in 1999. Additionally, he completed three different Master’s degrees at the University of Aveiro. Manuel also holds a Master’s degree in Music, with a focus on Performance/Research in clarinet, under Alain Damiens, and he was the first in Portugal to specialize in Performance on the clarinet. His other Master’s degrees include a Master in Music for Vocational Education (2010) and a Master in Music Teaching (2012).

In addition to his performance career, Manuel is frequently invited as a jury member, artistic consultant, speaker, and writer. He has contributed articles about music and is dedicated to teaching clarinet and chamber music, conducting, and performing as a soloist and with various ensembles. He regularly performs with orchestras and chamber music groups.

He is the author of the book Manifesto Doutrinário para o Estudo do Clarinete, a key work on clarinet study and performance.
